Welcome to Summer Heights!

The past couple of years have been quite the roller coaster for the Rice family. Hurricane Irma ravaged the British Virgin Islands in 2017, which resulted in the loss of our beloved yacht Endless Summer II. My parents helped design the yacht and chartered her for about 30 years. We helped many people achieve their vacation of a lifetime and instill a love for the British Virgin Islands. After Irma passed ESII was salvaged and was sold onto a new family who has repaired her and is now living aboard, but her charter days are behind her. I know there are many people around the world that will never forget the fun and amazing experiences they had with our various crew and interactions with my family over three decades of charters.esii-under sail

My father Barry was always a very driven man. Owning a beautiful and successful charter yacht wasn’t enough and so my parents designed and built our home and spectacular rental villa: Summer Heights. The villa, which is situated on Havers Hill, has played host to many guests since it was completed back in the late ’90s. Many of those guests have since become very good friends, returning year after year and always with a smile.

The loss of Endless Summer II wasn’t the only loss my family has endured. My mother, Rosalind (Roz as she liked to be called), lost her battle with cancer in January of 2018. She was always so brave during her fight with the disease but it all was too much in the end. Her loving nature and kind heart is missed terribly. Unfortunately in April of this year, my father came down with an illness while visiting the US and passed away suddenly. We held a lovely life celebration party for him in Tortola that was attended by over 125 people.

My parents worked very hard with our family business and I treasure the many memories we made for the guests who stayed and sailed with us over the years.  I grew up an island girl amongst all of this and I hope that some of you will remember me if our paths crossed. Since graduating from college in the USA I returned to the islands and worked both with my parents and also gaining a wide variety of experience on other charter yachts throughout the Caribbean as a hostess and chef.

SuzeSummer Heights is my next adventure and I look forward to welcoming you to this amazing villa as owner and manager. The reigns have now been handed down to me from my parents and I am excited to carry on and make them proud. Summer Heights came through Hurricane Irma with minimal damage which has all been repaired and we have made a number of recent upgrades to keep the home in pristine condition. Errol and Dian continue to work alongside me to maintain the high standards that my parents put in place. We look forward to ensuring that your vacation at Summer Heights, is one you will never forget. As my parents always used to say “Come as guests, leave as friends”!

Hi LeeAnn, I’m sorry that you were unable to come on vacation because of the hurricane. The islands have worked very hard and have bounced back well. If you’d like to send an email to info@summerheights.com, we can touch base!

We are very sorry to hear of both your parents passing. We so enjoyed sailing on the endless summer, will never forget ! Remember your parents giving us a tour of summer heights, we will keep in mind on our next visit.

Susanna November 18, 2019 at 11:12 am

Jill, please keep us in mind for your next visit. I still have all the old guest books from the boat, so we could probably find your entry…that would be a trip down memory lane!

Sorry to hear that Roz and Barry have passed on. Please accept our condolances. I think we did two nude cruises on Endless summer, on the second I believe you were the cook. The experience of both was very satisyfying. I think we might have done a third but by then the days of Endless summer were gone I suspect

Regards

Thank you Ian for your condolences. I probably was your cook for your second one. I worked on the boat with Will and then my father for a few years after I graduated college. I’m sorry you weren’t able to come for a third trip, we did stop chartering in 2011 for a bit and now she has become a family live aboard boat with her new owners.

We are so sad to hear about Barry and Roz. I just spoke with Barry last year. He was very proud of you. Do you ever hear from Jamie?

Susanna November 18, 2019 at 11:19 am

Thank you Thad and Judy, I am still in touch with Jamie. He moved back to Vancouver with his wife and they now have a son and daughter. He is doing very well and wrote some words about both of my parents for their individual life celebration parties.
It touches my heart to know that my dad spoke highly of me. I hope I can continue to make him proud!

Thank you for your update. So good to be in touch and hear that you are carrying on in your family’s love of the BVI. I will pass on this information and maybe one day even be able to visit myself.
With love and every good wish on this new adventure.
Ruth

Hi Ruth! It would be nice to have you back down in the BVI! Thank you for the well wishes!

I have fond memories of spending a week with three other couples at Summer Heights prior to sailing on Endless Summer for a week. Roz and Barry were such wonderful hosts … we spent time with Barry on the land side and then Roz captivated us with wonderful meals on Endless Summer.I am so sorry to hear of their passing. They were such wonderful people.
I am sorry to hear Endless Summer was a victim of Hurricane Irma. She was a wonderful ship and I had always hoped to sail on her again one day. I cannot return to Tortola (as I have several times on cruise ships) without thinking of Barry and Roz as well as Endless Summer. I hope you continue in their tradition and are successful in your endeavors

Susanna November 18, 2019 at 11:34 am

Hi Tom, thank you for sharing your memories of ESII and my parents. My parents really loved entertaining people and making sure that they had a holiday of a lifetime. They were wonderful people and we are missing them greatly.
If you ever find yourself back in Tortola for a stop on a cruise ship, let me know! If I am here, it would be nice to meet up and I could take you back to the house or have a drink together!

Christel November 17, 2019 at 5:22 pm

Oh my gosh! Thanks for sharing. My condolences are with you. I had the pleasure of staying at Summer Heights three years ago to celebrate my milestone birthday. It is such a beautiful place and your parents were amazing and gracious hosts from beginning to end. I look forward to visiting Summer Heights again and seeing the upgrades.

Susanna November 18, 2019 at 11:48 am

It would be nice to have you back here for another visit! We have upgraded many of the kitchen appliances and the outdoor furniture. The view is still as amazing as ever!

Jan & John King November 17, 2019 at 6:08 pm

We were so sorry to hear about your parents. While we haven’t visited in years, we have fond memories of both sailing on Endless Summer with friends and staying at the villa (we even managed to sneak you and your Mom away for lunch as I recall … ). So happy to hear that the villa is in such capable hands and we certainly hope to visit again one day. All the best to you.

Susanna November 18, 2019 at 11:55 am

Hi Jan & John, I’m glad my mom and I were able to join you for a lunch while you stayed at the villa! Thank you for your condolences, I’m hoping to continue on their legacy. It would be great to have you guys back in the BVI!

Stan Marks November 17, 2019 at 6:54 pm

Very sorry to hear of your loss!
I have very fond memories of your parents, Endless Summer II and of the Villa. My wife, several friends sailed twice on ES II and Barry and Arizona were on at least once.
We all caught the sailing bug onboard.
Would love to get back to the BVI!!
Enjoy life and stay well!

Susanna November 18, 2019 at 11:58 am

Hi Stan, it is certainly very easy to catch the sailing bug, especially when you were on a boat like Endless Summer II! If you ever do want to come back to the BVI, you can always combine a sailing trip and a land based trip at the Villa!

Frances and Fordan Bonardi November 18, 2019 at 3:10 pm

With great sadness of hearing that you lost your wonderful parents. Also, the lost of the “Endless Summer ll “. My wife Fran and I, with three other couples
took the ESll in 1995 and 1998, trips that will stay in our memory for our lifetimes. Barry ams Roz were exceptional in many ways, and made us feel very comfortable through our stay and sail. Always felt band we never got back, but life makes changes for everybody. Summer heights as you call it was very new in 1998, and we enjoyed it very much, beautiful views of the water. I would recommend to all.

Susanna November 20, 2019 at 5:53 pm

Hi Fordan! Thank you, my parents were very special people and are going to be missed by many people around the world. I am so happy that you and Fran came sailing with us twice, and got a chance to stay at the villa! The view of the channel is second to none and you can spend hours getting lost in watching the boats sail by! I’m sorry to hear that you never got a chance to come back down to the BVI but it will live on forever in your memories!

Pam Gruchala November 19, 2019 at 12:50 am

Susanna
Like everyone, I’m devastated to hear of the passing of both of your parents. And so close. That’s so tough on you, I’ve been there.
Gary and I sailed on the ESll twice. Once in ‘05. And loved it so much we chartered the entire boat 2 years later to bring another couple and share our delight! Your mom was awesome and spoke of your often. She was very proud of you. We always dreamed of bringing our family to your villa someday. Thank you for keeping me in the loop. Those times with Roz and Jamie were the best of our life!

Susanna November 21, 2019 at 11:15 am

Hi Pam, thank you. I’m sorry you also had to experience a loss similar to mine.
I always enjoy hearing how much people loved chartering with my mom, her and Jamie were an incredible team. He said some very nice words about her and my dad at their life celebrations. I am thrilled you had so much fun that you came twice! The villa will always be here if you fancy visiting the BVI again!

Reli Zuckerman November 24, 2019 at 4:51 pm

Apologies I hadn’t read your message fully, I got a prompt from a mutual friend about the news. I am shocked and saddened about Barry passing away.
We met at Ros’s funeral. Barry and myself worked on advertising and brochures together in the late 80’s and 90’s. He brought me over to BVI to set up an advertising studio, it didn’t take off. I remember playing with you and your neighbour’s son when you where young in the sand along with Ros. However I did come back with my wife Elaine ans stayed in your other house on the water. Wonderful memories, I’ll cherish them for life.
Thank you Susana for keeping in touch and updating me of your news.
